Understanding your Genes, Hormones & Estrogen Metabolism

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Understand Your Genes, Hormones & Estrogen Metabolism

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month-a reminder to prioritize your breast health, understand your personal risk factors, and take proactive steps toward lifelong wellness.

At Integrative Therapies & Wellness, we believe health care should be personalized. Your genetics, hormone balance, nutrition, lifestyle, and overall health all contribute to your unique health picture. While no test or supplement can guarantee breast cancer prevention, understanding more about your individual biology can help guide informed wellness decisions.

What Does Estrogen Have to Do with Breast Health?

Estrogen is an essential hormone that supports many functions throughout the body. After estrogen has done its job, the body metabolizes and processes it for elimination. This involves several pathways, including Phase 1 and Phase 2 estrogen metabolism.

Phase 1 estrogen metabolism produces different estrogen metabolites, including 2-OH, 4-OH, and 16-OH metabolites. These pathways differ in their biochemical activity. The 2-OH pathway is often discussed as a potentially more favorable pattern, while 4-OH metabolites can form reactive compounds that may damage DNA if not adequately neutralized

Phase 2 estrogen metabolism involves additional processing that helps the body handle and eliminate estrogen metabolites. One important process is methylation, which uses nutrients such as folate and vitamin B12 in a variety of biochemical reactions.

How Can Our Testing Help?

At Integrative Therapies & Wellness, we offer two tests that can provide complementary information about your individual biology.

DUTCH hormone testing

The DUTCH test assesses sex hormone levels and hormone metabolites, providing insight into estrogen metabolism patterns. It allows us to examine Phase 1 pathways, including the balance of 2-OH, 4-OH, and 16-OH metabolites, as well as markers associated with Phase 2 methylation.

These results can help us understand your hormone profile and identify patterns to discuss in the context of your symptoms, health history, and overall wellness.

Nutrition Genome testing

Our Nutrition Genome test explores selected genetic variants related to nutrient metabolism and biochemical processes, including methylation-related pathways. Certain genetic variations may influence how the body uses specific nutrients involved in these processes.

When appropriate, we can use this information to guide individualized nutrition and lifestyle recommendations. A genetic variant does not automatically mean a pathway is impaired or that you need a particular supplement.

By reviewing DUTCH and Nutrition Genome findings together, we can develop a more individualized picture of hormone metabolism and nutritional needs.

Take a Proactive Approach to Breast Health

Personalized wellness is one piece of the picture. Evidence-based breast health practices are essential:

  • Stay current with recommended mammograms and other screening based on your age and individual risk.
  • Discuss your personal and family history with your health care provider.
  • Consider genetic counseling when family history or other factors suggest inherited cancer risk.
  • Prioritize regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, and healthy weight.
  • Limit alcohol and avoid tobacco.

These habits can support overall health, and some are associated with reduced breast cancer risk.

Your Health Is Personal

This October, take time to learn more about your health history, hormones, and nutritional needs. At Integrative Therapies & Wellness, we can help you explore whether DUTCH hormone testing or Nutrition Genome testing may be appropriate and discuss how the findings fit into your broader wellness plan.
