A whole-person approach at Integrative Therapies & Wellness
The ability to reach overhead, take a comfortable breath, embrace someone you love, or rest without discomfort can make a meaningful difference in everyday life.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we recognize both the importance of early detection and the ongoing support people may need during and after treatment. We also want to make space for a conversation about breast and chest discomfort beyond cancer recovery.
At Integrative Therapies & Wellness, we believe your comfort matters. Our holistic occupational therapy approach considers the relationship between your tissues, movement, nervous system, and daily experiences—with care centered on your needs and goals.
Fascia is a connective tissue network that surrounds and connects every structure throughout your body allowing smooth movement and coordination. Fascia also impacts our circulation, lymphatic drainage, and even our perception of pain. In the chest, fascia is part of the tissue network associated with the breast, rib cage, shoulders, and surrounding muscles connected to the whole body/being via fascia. Fascia is meant to be fluid and moveable.
When fascia is healthy, it is flexible and responsive, allowing pain free movement. However, when it is restricted or tightened, due to surgery, radiation treatment, breastfeeding, stress or poor posture, it may cause pain and restrict motion. Breast fascia may also be affected by continual use of a tight bra. Radiation can also affect tissue flexibility. These changes may influence how comfortably you reach, dress, sleep, or participate in activities you enjoy.
Fascia is also closely connected to the lymphatic system. For those who have undergone breast cancer treatments, fascial restrictions can impair lymphatic drainage. Lymph node removal and radiation can cause swelling and discomfort. Addressing these fascial restrictions can help restore proper function and alleviate symptoms.
Finishing treatment does not always mean feeling fully recovered. Some people continue to experience pulling around scars, chest tightness, sensitivity, or difficulty moving an arm or shoulder.
These experiences deserve attention and support. Rehabilitation can help address movement limitations and make daily activities more comfortable.
Breast and chest concerns can also arise after other surgeries or alongside muscle tension, changes in activity, and the physical demands of caregiving or feeding a baby. Because discomfort can have many causes, appropriate evaluation comes first.
Myofascial release uses gentle, sustained hands-on pressure to address areas of tissue restriction. At Integrative Therapies & Wellness, we incorporate John F. Barnes Myofascial Release when appropriate as part of an individualized treatment plan.
Treatment may focus on:
Easing pain, tightness and discomfort.
Supporting comfortable shoulder and chest movement.
Addressing limited mobility around healed scars.
Improved lymphatic drainage
Making reaching, dressing, resting, and other daily activities easier.
Our work begins with listening. What feels restricted? What activities have become difficult? What would you like to feel more comfortable doing?
Alongside hands-on care, your sessions may include gentle movement, breathing awareness, positioning, and practical strategies for daily activities. We also consider how stress, sensitivity, and protective muscle tension may be affecting your experience.
We want care to feel collaborative. We explain what we recommend, ask for your consent, and respect your comfort and boundaries throughout treatment.
Breast cancer surgery and radiation can affect the lymphatic system and increase the risk of lymphedema, which may cause swelling in the arm, breast, or chest. Myofascial release opens up the lymphatic system to allow drainage to occur. Integrative Therapies & Wellness also offers Manual Lymphatic Drainage.
Learning how to care for yourself between appointments can be an empowering part of recovery. Depending on your needs, we may introduce comfortable movement, gentle self-treatment, or ways to adapt activities that place strain on sensitive areas.
After surgery or radiation, self-treatment should be guided by your care team and your stage of healing. More pressure is not always better, and discomfort is not something you need to push through.
We recognize not only the challenges faced by breast cancer survivors but also the importance of breast and chest health for everyone. Whether you are navigating recovery after breast cancer treatment, dealing with post-surgical pain, or experiencing discomfort due to other factors like stress or poor posture or seeking help for ongoing tightness and movement limitations, you deserve care that recognizes the whole person. Understanding the role of fascia can be a powerful tool in addressing these issues and promoting long-term health and overall well-being.
At Integrative Therapies & Wellness, we are here to help you explore what greater comfort, easier movement, and renewed connection with your body can look like.
